Maintaining the historic character of a Victorian house while incorporating subtle contemporary elements is not an easy task. Yet Ali Winkler, Founder and Principal designer of Ali Reeve Design, successfully met the challenge for her own family home.

The house built in 1901, is located in a historic residential district in Brooklyn, in the Southeast corner of the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood. The area primarily consists of brownstone row buildings built between 1870 and 1903 by Magnus E. Dahlander and Frederick B. Langston, architects who left their stamp on Brooklyn during this time.

When designing the space, Ali kept the home's history and period in mind, nodding to the Victorian design elements, while also incorporating more streamlined furniture such as the Bok dining table, that wouldn't distract from the ornate mouldings and millwork.

Ali created a unique, refined and inviting home by blending texture and colour. A feeling reinforced by juxtaposing modern lines such as the Rise rack, with vintage pieces, many of which were handed down from her family. Mixing meaningful pieces with contemporary, durable and sustainable furniture were important factors in creating a comfortable and functional home for her young family.
